The first day of school brings all kinds of feelings: excitement, curiosity, maybe even a few jitters. Whether your child is starting preschool or entering a new grade, a little preparation now can go a long way in helping them feel confident and secure when the school year begins. Here are a few supportive, family-friendly strategies to help ease the transition and start the school year off on the right foot.
🌙 Start a Bedtime Routine—Now!
The earlier you begin shifting into a consistent bedtime routine, the easier the first week of school will be. Try starting the routine an hour before your child’s ideal bedtime. This allows plenty of time to wind down and signals to your child that sleep is coming soon.
Example Bedtime Routine:
🕖 7:00 PM
-
Bath time
-
Lay out tomorrow’s clothes
-
Wind-down activity (read a book, play a quiet game, do a simple meditation)
🕗 8:00 PM
-
Hugs, kisses, and goodnight!
🏫 Preview the School Environment
Help your child feel more comfortable by making the school environment feel familiar before the big day.
-
Take a preview walk: Visit the school grounds and explore the bus stop or drop-off loop, playground, and entrance door.
-
Meet & Greet: Attend any scheduled meet-the-teacher events. If that’s not an option or your child needs more, consider asking the school about an informal visit.
-
Browse the school’s website: Show your child photos of the school, teachers, or special areas like the library or gym.
-
Read books about starting school: Stories are a great way to spark conversation and ease worries.
