Food Fun

Mealtime can be one of the most stressful parts of the day for families with picky eaters or children with feeding challenges.

That is why our pediatric therapy team at Good Beginnings puts together regular food play ideas designed to make eating feel less like a battle and more like an adventure.

Each Food Fun activity is rooted in the same sensory and motor principles our therapists use in feeding therapy sessions.

Food play builds tolerance for new textures, supports fine motor development through handling and arranging foods, and gives kids a low-pressure way to explore what is on their plate.

No special equipment needed. Just your kitchen, a willing kid, and a little creativity.

Browse the activities below, try one this week, and if your child needs more support around mealtime, our feeding therapy team is here to help.

Snack Time Sets Sail!

Graphic with the text "Ahoy Sailors!" in yellow script across the top. The central photo displays a plate of kid friendly snacks made from celery sticks filled with light blue cream cheese or spread, topped with orange goldfish crackers to look like boats in water. The dark blue background features the Good Beginnings logo at the top left, and illustrated ocean waves with a small sailboat at the bottom right.

Create edible canoes with your child using celery, their favorite spread, and a few tasty toppings like goldfish crackers, raisins, or berries.

Kids can spread, place, and decorate their own boats while building fine motor skills, hand strength, and creativity. Bonus points for letting them “float” their canoes across the table before taking a bite! 🛶🍓🐟

Torch Fruit Cone!

Graphic titled "FAMILY ZEN DEN" featuring an ice cream cone filled with yogurt and sliced fresh fruit (peaches and pineapple) on a wooden surface. The background is white with playful doodles, illustrations of two young girls doing yoga poses, and a "GOOD BEGINNINGS" logo at the bottom.

🧘‍♀️Bring a little calm to your summer with this fun and healthy Torch Fruit Cone! 🍓🍑

Have your child build their own snack by arranging their favorite fruits, exploring different colors and textures, and enjoying a mindful break from the summer heat.

This simple activity builds fine motor skills, encourages food exploration, and creates a moment to slow down together. 💓

Eat The Rainbow!

Printable "Eat The Rainbow BINGO" game sheet by Good Beginnings, featuring a blank 4x4 grid surrounded by colorful illustrations of fruits and vegetables like watermelon, blueberries, carrots, and broccoli, with a rainbow design in the corners.
🌈 “Eat the Rainbow” is a nutrition strategy recommended by many trusted medical organizations to encourage a varied diet and support healthy digestion.

Turn it into a game with our customizable Eat the Rainbow Bingo card!

The best part? You get to customize it! Fill each square with foods that match your child’s goals: different colors, food groups, textures, or even new foods they’re working up to trying.

Every bite is a win! Celebrate each square they complete and see if they can earn a BINGO while building confidence around food.

Remember, progress doesn’t have to happen all at once. Small steps can lead to big successes! ❤️

Save this for your next grocery trip or mealtime challenge. If your child continues to struggle with picky eating, our feeding therapists are here to help!
